- Hip abductors are a major group of muscles (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus) located on the outside of the hip and buttock area
- These muscles are often referred to as the “rotator cuff of the hip”
- Tears may occur from trauma such as a fall or maybe atraumatic and come on slowly
- Hip abductor tears maybe full or partial
Symptoms of Hip Abductor Tears
- Pain is often on the outside (lateral) of the hip but can be vague in other areas of the hip
- Inability or weakness lifting the leg when lying on your side
- Trendelenburg’s sign – dropping of the pelvis towards the unaffected side when walking
Diagnosis of Hip Abductor Tears
Dr. Jennings and his team will evaluate your condition based on the following
- Your medical history
- A physical examination of the hip and thigh region
- X-rays
- And other diagnostic test as needed (i.e. MRI or ultrasound)
