Osteoarthritis of the Hip pic

What is Osteoarthritis of the Hip?

  • Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis.
  • It is thought to be caused by “wear-and-tear” but it is much more complicated than this.
  • This disease affects the tissue covering the ends of bones in a joint called cartilage.
  • In osteoarthritis, the cartilage becomes damaged and worn out, causing pain, swelling, stiffness and restricted movement in the affected joint.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the Hip

  • Most patients will experience pain in their groin region
  • The leg may be shorter secondary to wearing of the joint cartilage
  • Many patients think they may have “pulled a muscle” leading to pain in the groin
  • Around 5-10% of patients may experience pain in other areas besides the groin
    • Outside of the hip
    • Buttocks
    • Referred pain to the knee
