What is Osteoarthritis of the Hip?
- Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, is the most common form of arthritis.
- It is thought to be caused by “wear-and-tear” but it is much more complicated than this.
- This disease affects the tissue covering the ends of bones in a joint called cartilage.
- In osteoarthritis, the cartilage becomes damaged and worn out, causing pain, swelling, stiffness and restricted movement in the affected joint.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the Hip
- Most patients will experience pain in their groin region
- The leg may be shorter secondary to wearing of the joint cartilage
- Many patients think they may have “pulled a muscle” leading to pain in the groin
- Around 5-10% of patients may experience pain in other areas besides the groin
- Outside of the hip
- Buttocks
- Referred pain to the knee
